What is the difference between double and triple glazing?

Double glazing is a sealed glazed unit that is crafted with two panes of glass whereas triple glazing has three panes of glass. The panes of glazing used in each unit aren’t required to be the same. Double and triple glazing can utilise the same types of glass, even though they have different aesthetic and glazing needs.
  • Triple glazing has three panes of glass, while double glazing only has two.
  • Triple glazing is heavier than double glazing and more expensive.
  • Triple glazing can provide slightly stronger energy efficiency, reduced condensation, and better sound resistance.

Improved heat retention

Double glazing works by having a gap of air that minimises the thermal transmission of hot and cold air. Triple glazing adds another pane of glass, which will further reduce the thermal transfer of both hot and cold air.Triple glazing is essentially a double, double glazing unit. Adding another pane of glass in a triple glazed profile creates an air ga to increase the efficiency of solar gain or heat loss.If both window profiles are crafted from the same material and to the same quality, then the triple glazed installation should be around 20-30% more energy efficient. Not only does the extra pane of glass play a role in minimising heat loss, but the added air gaps can improve thermal efficiency. These air gaps and filled with inert glass like argon or krypton which can help your building better retain heat.

Noise Reduction

If you live in a noisy, built-up area or by a busy road, replacing your windows will help minimise noise. Whilst double glazing installations can help reduce acoustics, triple glazing can achieve even more superior noise insulation, but there are some downsides.By investing in a window with different combinations of pane thicknesses, you can further improve the acoustic insulation of your home. The size of the gap between the panes also plays an important role in noise reduction, as the larger the gap, the better the acoustic insulation will be.If you want to minimise noise reduction and enjoy a more peaceful home, get in touch with our team. We will be happy to talk you through the two options and help you get the best for your home improvement project. Whilst triple glazing is more effective in many ways, double glazing installed by a knowledgeable team may be enough.

Depth of frames

One of the key differences between double and triple glazing is the depth of the glazed units. The standard width of a double glazed unit is 28mm but for a triple glazed unit, it is 36mm. That extra depth on the triple glazed unit can mean that triple glazing can’t always be retrofitted into existing profiles.

Risk of cold patches

Damp and condensation occur when excess moisture in the air comes in contact with a cold surface, creating water droplets. Your home will suffer from cold patches when there is a bigger difference between the U- values of walls or floors and the windows.Triple glazing has some of the most efficient U values in the industry, which can help reduce cold patches. These cold patches are the cause of damp areas and condensation. These won’t just affect your home and the market value, but can also be determinantal to the health of inhabitants.

Which is better for me?

If you have north facing windows which create a cold room, we recommend investing in triple glazing as it’s the most energy efficient design we offer. If your home is subjected to extreme weather conditions, for example, it’s on the coastline or is heavily exposed, triple glazing will be greatly beneficial.Triple glazing isn't the right choice for every homeowner.
