The efficiency of double glazing
In the UK, at least 18% of heat is lost through windows, and if a home only has single glazing, it could be losing out on twice as much heat as homes with double glazing installed. Double glazed windows throughout the home can allow homeowners to stay warm while reducing their carbon footprint. The space between the panes of glass traps air, which acts as a fantastic insulator that traps natural heat. This trapped heat keeps the property warmer for longer, so the heating system can be turned down or even completely off more often! Additionally, double glazing can also improve the soundproofing of a building. Soundwaves pass through the first layer of glass but get trapped before they can pass through the second, so noises sound muffled. What’s the difference between double and triple glazing
Double glazing is a sealed glazed unit with two panes of glass instead of one. This allows for a small pocket of air which is an excellent insulator. Triple glazing includes three panes of glass to increase this insulation effect even further with a second pocket of air. Both types of glazing provide excellent protection against the cold and noisy traffic and can keep homes comfortable throughout the year. However, triple glazing can be up to 40% more thermally efficient than certain kinds of uPVC double glazing. The additional third pane of glass can also greatly reduce draughts and cold spots from forming. Double glazing still has its own benefits, though, such as being lighter and more cost-effective to develop.
